Welcome back!
Hey everyone!
Hope you all had an amazing winter break! What’s something exciting that you did this holiday season? I know there were a few Norcal meetups in the San Francisco bay area (yeah norcal!) and a few in the LA area. Now that break is over and school is starting up again, are you all ready for the start of another quarter full of MASAwesome events?
We have lots of fanstasmical events planned for you guys, so keep your eyes peeled!
Just to name a few…
- Mystery Bus (??!!?!)
- MASAssins
- FUSION Kickoff
- and as always, lots of exciting and fun-filled GBMs!
Our first event this quarter is Sports Day, which is this Saturday, 2pm at Nobel Park. More info here. See you all there!
MASA’s Week 6 Events!
Hey MASA! Hope everyone has been doing well! Good luck on any midterms/papers/quizzes coming up. Of course you all know that if you ever need any kind of study break, MASA will always be here to ease the pain of studying. Call up your (newly found!) sidekick, MASA-friend, or attend one of our events, and take a break from studying
So here’s what’s been going on with MASA this past week:
MASA GBM!
On Wednesday, we had our 3rd GBM – which was also our Sidekick Revealing Night! To get the night started, we played a pretty fun ice breaker game, brought to you by our very own Membership Chairs, Mary and Vinson. Imagine playing charades – except imagine it with a whole group of people acting out different things, all at once! Our Cultural Rangers also did a pretty awesome job telling us about some crazy-cool Asian Inventions. Without this presentation, we would have lived our lives not knowing who were the first to implement a natural form of pesticide, or where the toilet was invented! Oh, the horror!
This MASA GBM was a special one indeed! Not only did a lot of us find out who our sidekicks were (more on that later!), but we even caught a glimpse of the Evil Count Willis in action! :O We were told the story of “A Series of Unfortunate Events… and How MASA Made Them Better,” starring our very own Jennifer Amy Tran and Count Willis – er, I mean, Willis Phu. Conveniently enough, our upcoming events fit perfectly into the plot of this story. Thanks to all the staff who made this possible!
But now, Sidekicks! The MASA Sidekicks program is one that matches a Little to a Big, based on personality and various other factors. After applying a few weeks ago, we finally found out who our Bigs/Littles were on Wednesday! There were many big hugs and happy faces that night
We played some games, drew funny pictures of our new sidekicks, and got to know them a little better. If you didn’t get a chance to sign up for the Sidekick program, there’s always next year! Or you might be lucky and find someone who is willing to adopt
kunFUSION Workshop!
On Thursday we had our very first kunFUSION Workshop of the year! These aren’t official kF practices – they’re just a chance for people to come out and learn some new dances. And whoo, were there a lot of people who showed up! A huge mass of people followed Philip (yay for our kF Head Coordinator!) to start stretching, and then into our room inside RIMAC. There was barely enough space to move! This time’s dance was taught by the talented Eric Pham, who was a choreographer from the previous kF years, to the song Whatcha Say. It was a lot of fun learning this dance - now every time I hear this song on the radio, I feel the need to drop everything and start dancing
Videos of this practice and dance are up on the kunFUSION facebook group, and also here.
Grocery Run!
On Saturday, MASA held a grocery run for all those people who didn’t have cars, but desperately wanted some good Asian groceries. We went to Sam Woo for a quick lunch, then got right into shopping mode – food shopping, that is. We shopped at Ranch 99, then dropped by Marukai Market and Daiso for some ice cream and cheap/useful household things. Yay for ice cream!
We didn’t have a grocery run last year, so I’m really glad we got to host one this year! If you missed out on this run, you could grab your Sidekick (or any friend with a car) and do a family grocery run! I never realized shopping for food could be so fun
WELL that’s it for this weekly update! See you guys next time, and remember to check the MASA website or facebook group for more updates on upcoming events!
MASA’s Pho Night and 1st GBM!
Helloooo MASA!!
Wow, what huge turn out for our first two events of the year!
Last Thursday, MASA held our annual Pho Night at Phuong Trang. More than 100 people showed up this year! The restaurant was gracious enough to reserve almost half of the restaurant for MASA <3. It was great seeing a lot of familiar and old faces (GBMers from last year, alumni who came out to support MASA :]), and also a lot of new faces (yay for new GBMers!). We all had a chance to catch up with old friends and a chance to meet someone new
It seemed like everyone had a lot of fun bonding over good Vietnamese food.
We also had our first GBM (general body meeting) tonight! A whole bunch of people showed up to this event as well, and I saw a lot of people who also went to Pho Night there
Our first GBM was a big success! We had an introductory video to MASA, “First Hello,” starring our very own Hao Wang and the MASA 5 and set to Big Bang’s “Last Farewell.” Good job to MASA’s media team for doing a great job
Dan from SDAFF (San Diego Asian Film Festival) also came to tell us about what’s going on in this 10th year of the festival. SDAFF is an organization that focuses on Asian American and Asian international cinema. He told showed us clips from so many films that sound interesting and funny – good thing MASA is going to watch “People I’ve Slept With” in a couple weeks! The world premiere of this film co-presented by MASA is on October 23, and MASA is going as a group to watch it! More to come later
We had our aftersocial at Tapioca Express on campus, and got a chance to bond some more. Yay! A bunch of people stayed long after everyone else had left and played Ultimate Ninja. It was pretty epic to watch them try to hit each others’ hands, and end up frozen in slightly awkward positions
Here are some photos from these events:

That’s all for now, folks. Stay classy, MASA
Welcome to MASA!
Hi everyone!
Its the start of another new school year, and another year full of MASAwesome events! Yay!
Hope you all had a wonderful and exciting summer, whether you went out traveling around the world, took summer classes, or just chilled at home. You’ll all have a chance to share your stories at two of our upcoming events: Pho Night (10/1) and the first MASA GBM of the year (10/7)! Or, drop by while we’re tabling on Library Walk – we’ll have a MASA table out there this week, and you’ll get to see new and old faces alike.
Visit the official MASA website for more information about what we’re up to now!
